It’s 11:40pm. Ed Okin slips out of bed without awakening a sleeping Ellen. He puts on his wristwatch and gets dressed.

Closing the front door of his house, Ed walks to his Toyota, which is parked on the street.
   
Ed’s car takes three tries to start. Finally the engine turns over, and he turns the corner from Segrell Way onto Slauson Avenue.
